ABOUT THE ARTIST
Elaine West is a Marin County (CA) oil painter known for a range of subjects and painting styles. West earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mt. St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles with a specialization in drawing and painting. After teaching art and design in Southern California and working in graphic design in San Francisco Elaine returned to fine art full-time in 2008, focusing on plein air (open air) painting in oils. Since that time she has widened her scope with studio work, and larger abstract works. She recently moved to the Inverness Ridge, after 20 years on the water in Sausalito.
In plein air realism Elaine finds satisfaction in capturing the light or impressions of a natural scene on location outdoors. Her realistic studio work might be from a still life set up or from photos she's taken in her travels. Her abstract works are sometimes inspired by the composition or color schemes of previous realistic paintings or her photos, but many are pure abstraction and come from the simple desire to escape the confines of realism, to see "where the painting wants to go".
Elaine has participated in numerous shows - 2018 included 3 solo exhibitions, and 2 group shows (see sidebar). Previous exhibitions included the Glimpse of Nicasio show in West Marin, juried shows with the California Art League, and San Francisco's Studio Gallery, and Mill Valley's Depot. Her work has been featured twice in Marin magazine, and in 2016-2017 she was one of the best-selling artists through downtown Sausalito's Toadfish Gallery.
